What karaoke taught me about marketing (and how it can help you shine like a star)
I spent a glorious weekend with friends. Ramen for dinner, spicy margaritas, and some truly terrible karaoke. And it got me thinking…
Why do we give ourselves permission to be bad at karaoke?
In fact, the worse you are, the more fun it is! No one expects perfection. We just get up there, belt it out, and enjoy the moment. So why don’t we give ourselves that same grace when it comes to marketing our businesses?
You don’t have to get your marketing right the first time
As kids, we’re told: If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. But when it comes to marketing our businesses, we somehow expect to nail it on the first try. Or worse, we don’t try at all because we’re scared of getting it wrong.
But here’s the thing: marketing is a skill, just like singing. It takes practice. And if you don’t start putting content out there, you’ll never improve.
Your posts won’t be perfect. Your first email might not be a masterpiece. But your ideal clients aren’t looking for perfection; they’re looking for you!
Your expertise.
Your insights.
And the unique perspective only you can bring.
So let’s take a cue from karaoke and apply these three lessons to your marketing:
1. Get yourself a hype squad
Karaoke is 100x better when you’ve got a group cheering you on (even if, like me, you’re off-key). The same goes for marketing. Running a business can be isolating, and creating content requires energy, confidence, and creativity.
Find your business hype squad. Whether it’s a group of fellow women entrepreneurs, a networking community, or even a marketing mentor (hi, that’s me!). Surround yourself with people who celebrate your small wins and remind you to keep showing up.
2. Your voice is what makes it special
Karaoke isn’t about flawless vocals. If we wanted perfect, we’d listen to the original artist. It’s about your version of the song. The energy, the passion, the personality, the fun.
Your marketing works the same way. Yeah – marketing is the funn-est part of running a business, imo.
Your audience isn’t looking for another carbon-copy expert saying the same thing as everyone else. They want your take, your experiences, your approach. Your voice is your superpower.
So own it.
3. Keep the hits coming
Nobody wants to sit through a bunch of slow, unfamiliar songs at karaoke. The crowd gets excited when you drop a classic.
In marketing, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel every time you create content. Repurpose what works. If you’ve shared a post that resonated, turn it into a Reel series, an email, or a carousel. Keep playing the hits because new people are always discovering you.
